Rick Kelly was 13th fastest in the #15 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore, keen to concentrate on car set-up overnight to work on gaining extra speed out of the several tight corners on the Townsville layout.
Todd Kelly was 18th fastest in his #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore, but pleased with the progress of his car as he used a well worn set of tyres to set his fastest time, saving all his new or ‘green' sets for the qualifying sessions and 72-lap races over the weekend.
Will Davison was fastest in practice today ahead of Michael Caruso and Jason Richards.
JACK DANIEL'S RACING QUOTEBOARD
Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:
"The track is not much different to what we thought from looking at it yesterday and it's just very enjoyable to learn a new circuit today," said Rick Kelly.
"It's quite exciting in the first couple of runs of practice to be able to do that because as drivers, Todd and I have both been in V8s for a number of years now and it's very rare that we get the opportunity to learn a new track.
"So today was a lot of fun out there in the Jack Daniel's Commodore, we weren't sure exactly what it was going to be like out there.
"Throughout the session we made a fair few changes to the car that really helped, as well as a couple that didn't, so it was really good.
"Sometimes you go to a track and make a lot of changes and you don't get really good feedback, but today the car we had gave us a lot of feedback to build on for a solid day tomorrow."
Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:
"It was good to learn a new track today," said Todd Kelly.
"It was good fun going out not knowing where to brake and where to turn but it only ever really takes two or three laps to get all that sorted and then the biggest issue is trying to work out what to do with the car.
"We were a little bit confused for a lot of that session because a lot of cars were on pretty good tyres, and a lot better quality of tyre than what we were on. By the end of the session, on our old tyres, we were pretty happy with the times.
"I know we are 18th but most of the cars in front of us used a set out of their green race tyres and we didn't.
"I am pretty happy with where the Jack Daniel's Commodore is at and when we throw a set of new tyres onto it I reckon we will be up there.
"When you walk around the track and drive around it at 60km/h it's always quite a bit different the next day when you're in the race car going 250km/h as far as race lines and where you think the car is going to be.
"We didn't really read too much into the track yesterday and just tried to work it out this morning. Everything is as expected.
"It's a pretty good place to drive around and it will be an extremely good track in qualifying. If we can get in the shootout and get the track to ourselves for that one lap it would be a really good track for those all-out, shootout laps."
