TODD AND RICK FIND IMPROVEMENT TO SIT NINTH AT PHILLIP ISLAND

Tomorrow will see separate practice, qualifying and qualifying heat races for each driver to determine the starting grid for Sunday's L&H 500.

Mark Winterbottom set the fastest time in practice today ahead of Jamie Whincup and the Brad Jones Racing Commodore of Jason Richards and Cameron McConville.

JACK DANIEL'S RACING QUOTEBOARD

Rick Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:

"We had a tough first session, we tried a few things and didn't really make a lot of progress and then in the break we made a couple of significant changes on the Jack Daniel's Commodore and it went like a jet from the start of the second part of practice," said Rick Kelly.

"We learnt a lot about the tyres and the new compound as well. All in all we are pretty happy."

Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:

"Every now and then the Jack Daniel's Commodore was good on colder tyres, probably not too bad as a qualifying car, but we need to do a little bit of work and work out what to do with it for a race car set-up," said Todd Kelly.

"So far, so good. We are both comfortable in the car and both pretty similar on the track so it's all going to plan.

"The wind isn't a massive issue, when we did our track walk we went through all of that stuff. Over years and years of coming to this place we all have a handle on what that does to the handling of the car so our dramas are more chassis stuff and track grip level."

Ben Collins - #15 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:

"It's all good - it's a learning experience, learning as quickly as possible on a new track, new tyre and a car that is not that familiar," said Ben Collins.

"Making good progress, Nathan has been using his experience to help guide the developments we are making.

"We are discussing the changes we will make to try and balance the car on these tyres. Hopefully the car will be a bit more comfortable tomorrow.

"Phillip Island is a fantastic circuit, a mixture of two tracks we have back home, Thruxton, which is fast, and Oulton Park, which has a lot of the gradient changes.

"So it's great fun and I really enjoy it. It also looks like a very good track for racing and there's lots of places where you can potentially pass but whether that's the case or not, we will see on Saturday."

Nathan Pretty - #15 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:

"We are getting miles under our belt," said Nathan Pretty.

"It's been 12 months since I have been here. Ben hasn't even been here yet so it's a matter of getting comfortable with the car again and getting back in the groove.

"These boys that are driving them all the time ... it's not easy to just jump in again after a break. I felt like crying a couple of times (laughs)."
