Rick Kelly had a podium finish slip through his fingers aboard the #15 Jack Daniel's Commodore, ending today's race in 12th place.
Rick Kelly qualified fourth and a blinding start had him in second place by the first corner of the race.
From there the younger of the Kelly brothers showed great pace and was in top three contention all race long, but a decision to bring Rick in for a third and final pit stop on lap 60 went against Jack Daniel's Racing when two lengthy Safety Car periods meant that rivals were able to save fuel and avoid completing a further stop.
After three races in the 2011 V8 Supercars Championship Rick Kelly sits 16th in the points standings with Todd Kelly just nine points behind in 18th place.
Garth Tander won today's opening race of the Clipsal 500 ahead of Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes.
The second and final leg of the Clipsal 500 will be held at the Adelaide Parklands street circuit tomorrow.
JACK DANIEL'S RACING QUOTEBOARD:
TODD KELLY - #7 Holden Commodore
"Seventh place was not too bad from today," said Todd Kelly.
"Brendan (Hogan, Race Engineer - #7 Jack Daniel's Commodore) and the guys did a really good job with the strategy and made the right decisions.
"I was struggling in a few crucial areas on the track and lost some spots. It didn't really allow me to have a good crack at the guys in front.
"It wasn't the sort of day where I could just blaze through the field and get up the front with the car we had. Some parts of the track it was awesome but it was the parts of the track where you can't really make a passing move where I was fast.
"So it was just a matter of surviving and trying to get as many points as possible, so it was a pretty good result from that point of view.
"Clipsal is still a tough race, even when you get long Safety Cars like we did. You get in a rhythm when there are no Safety Cars and when you are sitting behind the Safety Car for a while you need to make sure you are sharp as soon as the race gets going again so you get back into a rhythm.
"It's good for the body to get a rest but it's probably harder for the head to get those long breaks.
"I hope we are better for qualifying. It's quite clear that we have a weakness that we need to work on. If we can improve that we will have a pretty good crack at it tomorrow.
"I was trying to steer clear of all the trouble and keep my Jack Daniel's Commodore nice and straight. It's a long race and if you whack someone and bend something early on it makes it a pretty hard day.
"There were a few people that were a little bit out of control so I gave those guys a but of space and just worried about running my own race."
